About

Bibi Soleimani is an Iranian Australian Artist who lives and works on Gadigal land (Sydney). She graduated from National Art School in 2022, majoring in sculpture. Bibi has been in a few group exhibitions and is planing to continue her studies in Master of Fine Art in drawing at National Art School.

In her practice, Bibi explores the mystifying life behind written word, the subjective experience of an ethereal world that resides within the words, regardless of their semantic meaning. Reciting poetry and applying calligraphic rules and techniques in writing, starting from childhood are deeply rooted in Persian culture. However, she applies writing with a gestural approach and engage with words as a whole entity independent to their traditional calligraphic rules and their individual linguistic meaning. The following is an excerpt from her proposal for MFA:

“I as the maker, fade away during the performance like ritual of writing and set no control over the process. The final installation form becomes the choreographic movement of form within space, a large word floating in the air, stripping back to be the calligraphy mark intertwined within the space surrounding it…

…the body

 and

the breath.”
